Legendary Ghanaian highlife singer Akosua Agyapong recently shared an interesting perspective on why celebrities tend to marry non-celebrities. In a conversation on Graphic Showbiz, she suggested it comes down to avoiding insecurity and mistrust.
According to Agyapong, celebrities who marry regular citizens outside of the entertainment industry appear to have more successful relationships. She attributes this to the spotlight factor, noting that two celebrities marrying each other can stir up doubts.
“If you do the same work that I do, there will always be trust issues. You are in the limelight, and I am too, so when you step out, I will always have doubts in my mind, no matter the trust,” she explained.
Agyapong drew from personal experience being formerly married to famed highlife musician Amakye Dede. She emphasized that the general suspicion and uncertainty that comes with both partners being famous can breed insecurity.
Overall, the legendary singer’s viewpoint highlights an intriguing observation – that the glare of the public eye can put added strain on a marriage between two celebs. She believes regular citizens who marry stars make for more stable pairings unaffected by the entertainment industry pressures.
While certainly not universally true, Agyapong provides food for thought on celebrity unions. Her take suggests that Ghanaian stars seeking strong marriages may be better paired with non-famous partners. Only time will tell if this trend continues in Ghana’s entertainment circles.
